WASHINGTON -- Mired in a slump that stretches back to his time with the Nationals, Matt Adams broke out of it in a big way on Wednesday night against his former team.
Making his second appearance of the Cardinals' three-game series in Washington, Adams clubbed a three-run home run in the first inning to give St. Louis a 3-0 lead in the rubber game at Nationals Park. He followed that with another homer, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
In the first inning, Adams sent a first-pitch curveball from Nationals starter Tanner Roark a projected 390 feet, according to Statcast™, over the wall in right-center field to drive in Matt Carpenter and Jose Martinez, both of whom singled off Roark to start the game.
