PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. • Matt Adams continues to bid for significant playing time when the regular season begins on Sunday.
Appearing in his fourth game in left field, where he has yet to have a chance, Adams ripped his club-high fifth homer of the spring in the fourth inning Tuesday. It was a three-run shot off New York Mets righthander Robert Gsellman and broke up a scoreless tie.
Adams, normally a first baseman, has four hits in five at-bats over his last two games and, with his homer, jumped his average to .333. His drive to the opposite field in left center came after a walk to Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta's second single of the game.
