The Vancouver native was inducted alongside a number of athletes, among them field hockey player Shelley Winter Andrews, Olympic speedskating medalist Denny Morrison and wheelchair rugby player Garrett Hickling.
Kariya, who does not make many appearances in the spotlight since retiring from hockey at 36 due to far too many concussions, is a figure of mystery among the media. Although he was called “bitter” and “reclusive” after missing former teammate Teemu Selanne’s jersey retirement in favor of going on a family ski trip, Kariya’s reasoning is a bit different.
