St. John’s did the improbable in a 78-68 win over DePaul, snapping their 4-game losing streak without much production from their backcourt.
It was a forgettable night for the Red Storm backcourt of Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds. The two freshmen combined for 17 points on 5-for-16 shooting, of which 14 belonged to Ponds. However, Malik Ellison’s hot hand from deep and Bashir Ahmed’s ability to get to the free throw line helped carry the St. John’s offense. Ellison finished with a career-high [and game-high] 23 points.
It was a game of runs for the Red Storm, taking a 15-8 lead early on due to a 7-0 run.
