Helmet technology company Riddell has partnered with digital manufacturing platform Carbon to design Riddell’s new Diamond football helmet model that features a customized 3D printed liner inside the helmet. Riddell’s SpeedFlex Precision Diamond helmet will retail this year for about $1,750, according to the Associated Press.
Riddell’s 3D printed lattice liner is powered by Carbon’s proprietary Digital Light Synthesis technology, which is used to scan an athlete’s head to determine a customized fit. Carbon’s software designs and selects an optimal liner contoured for each individual athlete. The helmets consist of more than 140,000 individual struts that absorb forces from linear and rotational impacts.
