The New York City Marathon already attracts more than 50,000 runners from around the world each year, but the New York Road Runners (NYRR) hopes to expand its presence even further by hosting a digital marathon for the first time this year.
The digital New York City Marathon would take place around the same time as the actual marathon that spans the city’s five boroughs, but it would open the race up to an uncapped number of people and allow them to participate at their leisure for a set amount of time from anywhere in the world.
The digital marathon would be part of the NYRR’s newly-launched digital running program, which the nonprofit says it debuted earlier this year in part to expand global awareness about its brand.
