Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh had tied a world record for having played in the most international test matches — but faced increasing criticism for his waning play with rising calls for him to step aside — as he competed in the annual Ashes matches with England on Jan. 3, 2003.
Waugh responded with the signature moment of his career by scoring a century with 102 runs, the final four coming on the last ball of the day, which he skipped over the boundary line. That, incidentally, tied another record, matching Aussie legend Don Bradman’s 29 test centuries.
