As Sporting Kansas City returned home Monday for a one-week break from its training camp in Tucson, Ariz., midfielder Roger Espinoza instead headed to Guatemala.
Espinoza has joined the Honduras men’s national team ahead of its international friendly Wednesday against Guatemala.
Espinoza has not appeared with the Honduras national team since March 2015, and he turned down a call-up last season in an effort to focus on returning to full health. He played for Honduras during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
After Wednesday’s friendly, Espinoza will rejoin Sporting KC for the second leg of its training camp in Tucson, which includes four preseason matches in the Desert Diamond Cup from Feb.
