Sporting KC is hosting its biggest home match in years on Sunday

A draw will do.

On the final day of the MLS season, that’s all Sporting Kansas City needs to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

But with second-place Los Angeles FC coming to town Sunday afternoon, that word has been predictably absent from the early-week strategy meetings, absent from the training sessions, absent from coach Peter Vermes’ vocabulary.

“We’re going to try to win,” Vermes said. “I don’t remember us ever talking about trying to draw in a game. Ever. So I don’t think we can even have that conversation. We have put ourselves in a position to have this opportunity, so we’re going to try to win the game.
