Sporting KC acquires targeted allocation money from NYCFC for international roster spot

Only in Major League Soccer.

Sporting Kansas City traded an international roster spot to New York City FC in exchange for targeted allocation money, the clubs announced Wednesday.

Targeted allocation money is a new fund that was announced by the league last July. It can be used to sign new players or to extend the contracts of current players, but it can only be used on players who earn more than the maximum salary cap charge of $436,250.

Sporting KC will receive the international roster spot back at the conclusion of the 2016 season. It has seven remaining for this year, with one left open.
