Sporting Kansas City honors the life of co-owner Neal Patterson during match against FC Dallas

As Sporting Kansas City players took the field Tuesday night for their U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match against FC Dallas, they did so with orange patches on their jerseys that read, “Neal” to honor the club’s late co-owner Neal Patterson.

Patterson, who was a longtime chairman and CEO of Cerner Corporation as well as a principal owner of Sporting KC, died Sunday at age 67 after a battle with cancer.

Sporting KC president Jake Reid said Patterson’s shares of the team will go to his family.

“It’s always been about the families, so I don’t think that changes,” Reid said.
