Rain is in forecast; here's what to expect for Sunday and Sporting KC's season opener | The Kansas City Star

Rain showers with an embedded thunderstorm or two are threatening to dampen afternoon and evening plans in Kansas City Sunday.

The showers are expected to be more widespread closer to midnight. However, rain could arrive by mid-afternoon Sunday and become more scattered by the 6:30 p.m. start of the Sporting Kansas City season opener against New York City FC at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan.

"Hopefully the game will be done before we see this more widespread activity," said Sarah Atkins, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Mo. "But we can't rule out a few showers moving over the KCK area with potentially an embedded thunderstorm during game time.
