The National Training and Coaching Development Center in Kansas City, Kan., is inching closer to reality.
Sporting Club, in conjunction with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Children’s Mercy Hospital, announced it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday for the state-of-the-art soccer facility.
The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday. Two hours later, Sporting Kansas City plays host to New York City FC at Children’s Mercy Park.
The $62 million NTCDC project, funded with sales tax revenue (STAR) bonds, will occupy two patches of land that neighbor Schlitterbahn water park.
U.S. Soccer has agreed to a 20-year lease to be a tenant inside the training center, which will sit on the southeast corner of 98th Street and Parallel, along with a handful of soccer fields.
