The delay lasted 110 minutes after a severe thunderstorm trailed Sporting Kansas City on its trip to Bridgeview, Ill., to face the Chicago Fire. But after the unexpected wait, Dom Dwyer needed only 71 seconds to head a ball across the goal line.
Except an offsides call negated the goal in the opening minutes. And Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson negated Dwyer again in the final minutes.
In sum, it added up to a 1-0 Chicago shutout of Sporting on Wednesday night, halting Sporting Kansas City’s five-match unbeaten streak in MLS play.
Sporting, 8-9-4, had scored 10 goals over its previous four games — the best current offensive stretch in MLS — but it couldn’t put the finishing touches on its best opportunities Wednesday.
