Madison Central head coach Toby Collums knew wideout Isaiah Spencer was talented from the first time he watched the recent Southern Miss football commit carve up the turf with smooth routes and reel in passes with soft hands.
But it took a pressurized environment and an off-script situation for Collums to see Spencer's true makeup.
Last year, Madison Central's outstanding starting quarterback, Vic Sutton, suffered a season-ending injury in a state quarterfinal game. When the Jaguars replaced him with a tight end for whom downfield passing was no strong suit, Spencer's role changed drastically.
