Southern Miss got a 1-pitch save from Matt Wallner to preserve its 7-4 victory at Marshall Friday.
The Thundering Herd loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Wallner threw one pitch and induced a game-ending double play off Reynaldo Pastrana’s bat.
The Golden Eagles, who won the Conference USA championship Thursday and clinched the No. 1 seed in next week’s league tournament in Biloxi, improve to 38-15 overall and 22-6 against C-USA opponents. Marshall drops to 19-30 and 7-21.
Walker Powell (7-2) gave up three earned runs in seven innings to pick up the win.
