He'd endured experiences as the offensive coordinator at Louisiana and tight ends coach at Memphis that left him with the belief that he couldn't win at the highest level while remaining true to his personal values.
Then, after the 2018 season, Tulane head coach Willie Fritz called.
"I was really thinking about going back to Division II and doing my thing (there)," Hall said Tuesday. "That's what I was, I was a DII guy. The way you can treat people in Division II is so much better than Division I — or I thought it was at that time.
