The long ball was kind to Southern Miss Saturday.
In the second game of its three-game series against second-place Louisiana Tech, the Golden Eagles hit a season-high five home runs in a 16-1 run rule-shortened, blowout victory. The rubber match is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
If 9th-ranked Southern Miss wins Sunday, it clinches the team’s second consecutive Conference USA championship. The Golden Eagles have won the league title four times in program history (2003, 2011, 2013, 2017).
Sophomore outfielder Matt Wallner, who homered twice (his 12th and 13th of the season), admitted that was at the forefront of his goals for the weekend.
