Southern Miss beats UIC in opening regional game

Southern Miss came from behind Friday afternoon to beat No. 4 seed Illinois-Chicago 8-7 at Pete Taylor Park.

The top-seeded Golden Eagles were down 6-1, but scored three runs in the fifth inning and fourth in the sixth to take control of the game. USM is now 49-14 this season, and advances to play the winner of Mississippi State and South Alabama at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Matthew Guidry came off the bench to drive in three runs. Hayden Roberts (5-2) got the win in relief, and Nick Sandlin pitched the ninth for his eighth save of the season.
