AUBURN, Ala. — Southern Miss baseball couldn’t have asked for more from its ace, Tanner Hall, who went nine innings and allowed just one run against Samford at Plainsman Park on Friday.
But it still wasn’t enough for USM to win its NCAA Tournament opener.
The Golden Eagles’ bats, having squandered numerous scoring chances, could not support their star pitcher’s excellence in a 4-2 loss that puts them one slip-up from elimination.
The game swung when USM reliever Justin Storm surrendered a solo homer to Josh Rodriguez, the first batter Samford sent to the plate after Hall’s departure.
