When Southern Mississippi athletics director Jeremy McClain announced Monday, Sept. 7 that the USM football program was making "a transition in leadership," he named Scotty Walden as the football team's new interim head coach.
Walden took over for Jay Hopson, who resigned after four-plus seasons as the USM football head coach. Southern Miss opened the season Thursday with a 32-21 loss to South Alabama.
Walden had been the co-offensive coordinator for Southern Miss this season along with the 2019 season. He's been at USM since 2017 as the receivers coach.
