Southern Miss evened its record by getting into the win column Saturday.

The Golden Eagles defeated Southern University 45-0 at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.

There were both praise-worthy performances and those that warrant a bit more scrutiny.

A — Defense. The numbers kind of speak for themselves. The Southern Miss defense (first, second and third teams) held the Jaguars to 140 yards of offense on 52 plays. That’s an average of 2.7 yards per play. Perhaps the most notable example of exactly how dominant the Golden Eagles were Saturday is how stingy they became on third down.
