North Texas edges Southern Miss

DENTON, Texas — The pendulum swung far and wide in Saturday’s game between Southern Miss and North Texas.

With both Conference USA teams fighting for bowl eligibility in the waning weeks of the season, the Mean Green took advantage of a missed field goal, a Keon Howard interception and a defensive stand to go up 17-0 in the first quarter.

Trailing 20-0, though, the Golden Eagles got off the mat late in the first half and put up a fight. Jay Hopson’s squad scored 23 straight points to take the lead into the fourth quarter. But North Texas went 65 yards on six plays, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Willy Ivery, to take a lead it would not give back.
