The season-opening stupor for Mississippi State baseball has been severe, the kind of post-national championship hangover that results in more whiffs than hits — and disappointing losses that put the glory of 2021 in the rear view mirror.
It began with a series loss to Long Beach State, and continued with a loss to Northern Kentucky on Friday. It nearly unraveled further against Grambling on Tuesday, but a 2-1 win prevented what would have been a shocking result.
But when the Bulldogs traveled to Pearl to face Southern Miss on Wednesday, the same non-functioning offense that has cropped up continually this season returned.
