Plans for Matt Wallner to take over full-time starter duties on the mound are going to have to wait.
Southern Miss head coach Scott Berry on Thursday confirmed reports that Wallner suffered a strain in his lower forearm and won't be available to pitch this weekend. D1 Baseball first reported the injury.
The preseason hype surrounding Wallner has been more than justifiable. He's earned All-American honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game.
The junior was also named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list and was tabbed as the C-USA Player of the Year.
