HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss football suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Liberty to open its season, falling 29-27 in the first four-overtime game in program history.
The Golden Eagles led 24-17 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but a heroic Liberty drive the length of the field forced overtime, where the two sides traded blows until Liberty secured the win by stopping a Golden Eagles two-point conversion try in quadruple overtime.
