As far as batting was concerned, Southern Mississippi's second round tilt against Marshall on Thursday was the polar opposite of its first-round win over Rice.
Whereas the Golden Eagles labored to get hits early in that Wednesday contest, their bats were alive and well from the opening inning. USM tallied 16 hits and defeated Marshall 10-5 at MGM Park in Biloxi.
Matt Wallner followed up his walk-off heroics up with a four-hit effort, and Gabe Montenegro led USM with three RBIs as the Golden Eagles forced the Thundering Herd to dig deep into their bullpen and send nine pitchers to the mound.
