8-6-3-2.
That's how the last play of the game reads in the final box score of Southern Miss' Conference USA Tournament championship 3-2 win over Rice six years ago. Unconventional, to be sure. Maybe even rare.
But, in the annals of Golden Eagles baseball lore, it represents much more. It still resonates with a passionate fanbase and still impresses even casual fans. The play – simply dubbed "The Double-Cut" – unfolded at precisely 4:11 p.m. on May 29, 2016, in front of a captive, packed house at Pete Taylor Park on West Fourth Street and under the harsh glare of a seemingly brighter-than-normal Pine Belt sun.
