Wayne Rooney 'is interested in becoming the new Southampton manager' following the sacking of Nathan Jones but DC United boss 'faces competition from Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard'

Wayne Rooney is reportedly interested in becoming the new Southampton manager.

Southampton are on the lookout for a new boss after Nathan Jones was sacked following just 14 games in charge.

Rooney, who is currently in charge of DC United, would relish the chance to return to English football, as reported by talkSPORT.

The report states that Rooney's former England team-mates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, who are both currently out of work, are also interested in the Southampton job.

Southampton are languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table with just 15 points from 22 games and whoever takes charge faces a major challenge in terms of helping the club to preserve their Premier League status.
