Southampton academy strikes gold again as Josh Sims stuns Everton

Ronald Koeman was given an unhappy return to St Mary's as Southampton beat the Dutchman's Everton 1-0 on Sunday, thanks to an academy kid he had never even heard of.

Josh Sims ran Everton ragged with his pace and super technique, and poked a cross to Charlie Austin for a debut assist inside the first 42 seconds.

It was Austin's ninth goal of the season as up-tempo Southampton got their mojo back after flat games against Liverpool and Sparta Prague.

Positives

Sims became the latest youth player off the famed Southampton academy conveyor belt, following in the footsteps of Sam McQueen, Jake Hesketh and Olufela Olomola who have all been given game time by manager Claude Puel.
