The former Southampton boss has emerged as a contender after Chris Wilder turned down the opportunity to take over at the troubled League One club.
Reading have been without a permanent manager since sacking Paul Ince with five games to go in the Championship last season.
Selles took charge for the final months of Southampton's Premier league campaign after replacing Nathan Jones but was unable to keep the Saints up.
The South Coast club confirmed last month the 40-year-old would not stay at the club after holding talks with him.
