Southampton missed the chance to close the gap on the automatic promotion places as they were held by Huddersfield in the Championship on Saturday.
Adam Armstrong's goal just after the half time break looked like it would be enough for Russell Martin's side to get the three points as they failed to leapfrog Leeds to go third in the table.
Ipswich play in the evening kick-off and could extend the gap to the automatic promotion places further, which currently stands at eight points.
