Same-sex marriage is now the law of the land.
The Supreme Court overturned a decision by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which had found on Nov. 6, 2014 that a same-sex marriage ban in Ohio did not violate the U.S. Constitution.
The court ruled 5-4, with Justice Anthony Kennedy, who read the opinion, joined by justices Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Elena Kagan.
The Sixth was the only federal court to uphold state same-sex marriage bans.
