Recent drowning highlights dangers of South Florida inlets

It's a gateway to the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, this turquoise-colored channel that cuts through Jupiter.

But over the years, the Jupiter Inlet also has been the scene of tragedy. Boaters and swimmers alike have died struggling in the sometimes treacherous waves. The most recent fatality came just over a week ago, when a 15-year-old boy drowned after the current pulled him into the inlet from the lagoon area of a park on its south side.

To local boaters and rescuers, it's no secret that the waters in and around the 400-foot-wide channel can be dangerous.
