PLANTATION — Several hundred people, most in pickup trucks and on motorcycles, took part in a 15-mile road rally in support of the Confederate battle flag Sunday, but not before they were jeered by protesters who denounced the banner as a symbol hate.
With Plantation police officers keeping about 40 demonstrators from blocking the exit from Plantation Heritage Park on Peters Road, a convoy of vehicles — many festooned with large U.S. and Confederate flags — roared off about 12:30 p.m. on a route that took them through Pembroke Pines before ending at Markham Park in Sunrise.
About 100 protesters showed up at Markham Park, where more than 20 Sunrise Police officers and Broward Sheriff's deputies kept the two groups a safe distance apart.
