A stretch of North Dixie Highway north of Commercial Boulevard is closed to motorists because of a fire at an Oakland Park apartment complex.
Multiple agencies, including Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, are at the blaze along the 5200 block of North Dixie Highway. Before dawn, smoke and flames could be seen as far away as Interstate 95.
By shortly after 7 a.m., most of the flames appeared to be out, but smoke continued to flow from the multi-story complex. Displaced residents were standing outside clutching the few items they were able to take before fleeing to safety.
