The number of Cuban migrants arriving in South Florida has spiked in recent months, but experts say such an increase is not uncommon.
Between January and March, 2,701 Cubans arrived in South Florida, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics. That figure is up from 866 from the same period the previous year, an increase of 212 percent.
"A three-month bump even of that much isn't out of the norm," said Charles Zelden, a Nova Southeastern University history professor. "Historically, the numbers go up and down."
Just Thursday morning, six migrants came ashore on Virginia Key Beach.
