Man accused of driving drunk, dragging police officer down Davie street

As officers walked Gerald Jerome Spate into booking at the Broward Main Jail, the 46-year-old Miramar man said, "I'm sorry, baby," to an officer he had dragged along a Davie street while fleeing a DUI investigation earlier that night, police said.

Spate faces 15 charges, including aggravated battery on an officer, DUI third offense over 10 years, refusal to submit to a DUI test and aggravated fleeing with serious injury or death, jail records show. He was being held Monday without bond for violating felony probation.

Davie police were dispatched about 7:45 p.m. Saturday to the 12900 block of Equestrian Trail in regard to a vehicle stopped at the end of the street with the driver either passed out or unconscious behind the wheel, Officer Brian Jessup wrote in a police report.
