Lauderdale tightens rules on vacation rentals

FORT LAUDERDALE – If you're going to rent your home to vacationers, the city wants to make sure they're not going to disturb your neighbors.

The state says cities can't ban short-term rentals, can't limit how frequently a property is rented and can't require a minimum length of stay. So city officials are taking other steps to clamp down on their proliferation in single-family neighborhoods.

Commissioners have tentatively agreed to require people renting their property to register with the city and to have annual health and safety inspections. The proposed law would cap the number of renters in any home, require a local contact for emergencies and allow the city to revoke the licenses of properties that repeatedly create disturbances or break the law.
