Hurricane Danny intensifies to Category 3

The status of Hurricane Danny, as of 2 p.m. Friday:

A hurricane hunter aircraft has found that Hurricane Danny has intensified to Category 3 strength, packing top winds of 115 mph as it lumbers west in the central Atlantic.

That makes it a major hurricane.

Because of wind shear and dry air, the compact system is expected to start weakening later today, the National Hurricane Center said.

The latest forecast calls for it to be a tropical storm on Sunday before it reaches the islands of the eastern Caribbean.

WHAT FLORIDA CAN EXPECT: It's too early to say whether Danny will affect Florida or the U.
