A former Broward Sheriff's deputy convicted of causing a fatal accident by racing to the scene of a non-emergency will be sentenced Thursday in a Broward courtroom.
Franklyn McCurrie, 27, was convicted in April of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of reckless driving in the January 23, 2010, death of Cara Catlin, 14, a freshman at Northeast High School in Oakland Park.
Catlin was the rear passenger in a Honda Civic driven by her stepsister, Heather Meyer, who was 21 at the time.
Prosecutors said McCurrie was driving his patrol car to provide support for a traffic stop.
