Something really big is going down in Deerfield Beach.
It weighs about 300 tons and is half the length of a football field. And when it's sunk one mile off the coast of Deerfield Beach, supporters hope the Rapa Nui Reef will grandly distinguish the city much the way 887 similar monuments did Easter Island in the remote South Pacific.
Rapa Nui Reef, named for its native Polynesian inhabitants, will be 15 statues of cast concrete, rising 6 to 22 feet from a 9-foot-tall ocean barge on the ocean floor in 75 feet of water.
