Drivers for Uber, Lyft or traditional taxi companies who flout the county's new laws will pay dearly, under a proposed slate of jumbo fines commissioners pushed forward Tuesday.
By a 6-3 vote, Broward County commissioners decided to consider a more ominous set of penalties — up to 30 times the norm for defiant drivers-for-hire caught without county licenses.
The slate of fines still needs a final vote on June 9. Commissioners Lois Wexler, Chip LaMarca and Beam Furr voted against setting the hearing Tuesday. Wexler called the fines "exorbitant.''
For now, fines for unregistered drivers-for-hire and unpermitted vehicles are $250 — or $500 for a second offense.
