A 7-foot manatee was rescued Tuesday after being trapped overnight in a pumping station next to the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Divers from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue wrapped the manatee in a stretcher and it was then hoisted out by a crane. The manatee, which had blood on its tail and nostrils, had been trapped by a grate and was unable to swim back due to the strong current.
The manatee was lifted on to a truck to be taken to the Miami Seaquarium for evaluation.
Liz Barraco, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the manatee "definitely has some injuries, but the biologists are really confident that just a quick rehab is what she needs.
