Cancer fundraisers rappel tallest building in Fort Lauderdale

Octogenarian Dee Atkinson didn't take the elevator or the stairs down from the 30th floor of downtown's tallest skyscraper.

She strapped on a harness, snapped on a friction carabiner, buckled on a helmet and pulled on gloves before she stepped over the edge to slowly descend by rope the dark-brown, Italian marble façade of the 110 Tower at 110 SE Sixth St., in Fort Lauderdale.

Atkinson, 82, was one of 65 people who went "Over the Edge for Gilda's" Saturday morning as part of a fundraising event for Gilda's Club South Florida, a nonprofit cancer support agency.
