A veteran prosecutor was fired this week after officials learned he deliberately failed to file hundreds of cases involving county ordinance and traffic violations as well as misdemeanor drunken driving incidents, the Broward State Attorney's Office said Thursday.
David Weigel had worked as an assistant state attorney for about 29 years before he was let go Tuesday.
State Attorney's Office spokesman Ron Ishoy said officials are still trying to determine how many cases went unfiled between 1997 and 2011. As of late Thursday, the count stood at 116 county ordinance violations and 177 misdemeanor DUIs. None of the defendants in the DUI cases had been arrested, nor will they be.
