Beckham group, Miami mayor OK plan for MLS stadium next to Marlins Park

David Beckham and his group of investors have agreed to build a privately-funded soccer stadium next to Marlins Park, Miami mayor Tomas Regalado announced Friday morning.

The proposed 25,000-seat stadium does not involve any partnering with the University of Miami football program, “at this time,’’ said Rafael de Guzman, an associate of Beckham’s partner and primary investor, Marcelo Claure, after the meeting.

Guzman said with UM changing presidents they could not move as quickly as Beckham’s group needed to do. They will be “open to talking” with Miami in the future, he said.

“This is a milestone,’’ Regaldo said of Beckham’s group deciding to build a stadium just west of Marlins Park.
