USC's David Williams wants to carry the load at running back - but has to win the job first

COLUMBIA — In high school, the yards and the honors piled up so quickly they could be difficult to keep track of. At South Carolina, David Williams has often felt stuck in neutral.

In his two seasons with the Gamecocks, there’s always seemed to be something in front of the junior running back — be it a defender, or another player on the USC roster. Williams entered preseason camp as the heir apparent to Brandon Wilds as the Gamecocks’ primary ball-carrier, and hoping to show flashes of the high school star he once was in Philadelphia.

“I feel like that guy is here, and I’m going to have more opportunities to show that I’m that guy,” Williams said.
