COLUMBIA — A career-best effort has earned South Carolina right-hander Clarke Schmidt the SEC Pitcher of the Week award.
The sophomore struck out a career-high nine batters in a career-best eight innings of work Friday in an 8-1 victory over Clemson at Founders Park. On the season, Schmidt is 3-0 with an earned run average of 0.43, striking out 23 while allowing five walks.
Schmidt’s effort produced the only victory in the three-game Clemson series for the Gamecocks (10-2), who dropped the final two outings in Greenville and Clemson. USC hosts Wofford on Tuesday and Furman on Wednesday before hosting Charleston Southern in a three-game series.
