USC DBs battle serious injuries; final signee on campus

South Carolina freshman cornerback Tayvn Jackson will miss two to three weeks with what Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp described Saturday as “a little bit more serious hamstring” injury, and that’s not the only injury hit the secondary took.

Freshman Chris Smith, a Rock Hill native, is “likely” headed toward a medical hardship scholarship (which would end his collegiate career) due to a hip injury. Smith has not practiced with the team this preseason.

“It’s not anything you can repair with surgery, and he’s in a lot of pain,” Muschamp said.

Safety Steven Montac, who is expected to be in the rotation, is questionable for the N.
